Then We Ate Hot Dogs For Breakfast

When he visits, my very limited time with Mr. Limanowski is precious. So precious, in fact, that we are often forced to fit a lot of plan into a little day. Sometimes this means eating hot dogs for breakfast. Despite my storied past of irresponsible eating, I can honestly say that the idea of this was even a bit much for me.

Alex and I have been on a quest to eat at Hot Doug's for years. Years, I say! It's a bit of a hike for us to get there, and in the past, missed planes, their limited hours (especially those for duck fat fries!) and my employer not recognizing "encased meats" as a legitimate excuse to miss work, have hindered that quest. At last, the stars aligned. I had promised my man Doug's, and we had one day to make it to this oft-touted sausage store. This was our chance.

Hot Doug's is open Saturday mornings at 11:00 am. Alex and I got there around 11:30 am and there was already a line to the back of the building. After years of waiting for my dog, what's another 1/2 hour? Wait we did, and finally it was our turn to order (from Doug himself!) One foie gras and duck sausage, topped with truffle aioli, for me; one Saucisse de Morteau, topped with smoked gouda, for the gentleman; and for the table, duck fat fries and a celery soda. That's right, celery soda. And if you're curious, it tastes like celery. And, the food, you ask? The food ruled my world.

The Place!
So eager to eat, I couldn't bother to wake up.
A mind warp because of this...
Foie gras and foie gras.
Saucisse de Morteau and gouda.
He thought someone was trying to steal his fries?
Table action.
P.S. According to Hot Doug's Twitter, Doug Sohn, the Doug, now has a book coming out. He will be speaking and signing books on June 30th at 10:00 am at 213 W. Institute Pl. There will also be samples, while they last. Get on it!
